The movie begins in 1963 as two young cowboys take on a summer job herding sheep in Wyoming. As summer wears on, they develop a relationship. As summer ends, the two part ways, marry and have families. They reunite four years later and the audience follows the next sixteen years of this difficult and complicated relationship between Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist. Their relationship, based on a connection neither could define nor fully acknowledge, is the focus of the bulk of the movie.
