Your Spirituality your way.  Each month we have a new lesson from varying beliefs.
The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" Jesus replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you." Luke 17:5-6

One of my favorite writers on the subject of prayer is the late Agnes Sanford. The daughter of a Presbyterian missionary and the wife of an Episcopal priest, Agnes Sanford had incredible faith and an amazing connection with God. Her lessons on praying for physical healing were my textbooks when I was learning to become a person of prayer.

Towards the end of her life, Agnes began to pray for a different kind of healing – the healing of the earth. Her prayer circle would pray for the weakening of the hurricanes that approached the New England coast where she lived. Then, she moved to southern California because she felt called to pray for the San Andreas Fault. Every day Agnes would pray for relief for the tensions in the earth and for the healing for the earth. While there were many who scoffed at her, they didn't bother Agnes because she knew that God was bigger and more powerful than any hurricane or earthquake.

I have to remind myself of Agnes Sanford's lessons from time to time. My prayers seem so small against the giant problems of this world. However, prayer is not about the one who prays. Prayer is about the One to whom we pray. And so I trust in the greatness of our Creator and I keep praying.

The Goliath that we are facing right now in Texas is Proposition 2. Proposition 2 is a proposed amendment to the Texas constitution banning same-sex marriage and civil unions even though same-sex marriage and civil unions are already against the law in Texas. Since this is the South, many people say that our side has little to no possibility of defeating this amendment. But I am going to spend this weekend in prayer because I know that God is greater than hate and more powerful than prejudice. And I ask that you might consider joining your prayers to mine.

And so I invite you to pray for God’s ultimate will for this election. Pray that all Texas voters will allow their hearts to be moved by the Holy Spirit. Pray for understanding and love between the opposing sides of this election. Ask for wisdom, faith and energy for those who are leading the opposition against Proposition 2. And pray that no matter what the election’s outcome may be, that our community will grow in hope and in unity.

Graceful Lord, help me open my heart and soul to you in prayer. May my prayers and my life be instruments of your love, of your peace and of your will. Amen.
